Giroux and Schenn score 1:14 apart
in the second period to clinch win
Andrej Mezaros was a force all night against the Leafs. He finished +3 with an assist, 4
hits, 3 blocked shots in 19 minutes of ice time.
The Flyers came out and dominated the Leafs in
the first period out-shooting them 16-5 and it look freakishly like the Islanders game. But Scott Hartnell batted a
fluttering puck out of the air and the Flyers had a lead going into the second period. After the goal he immediately
fought Leafs tough-guy defensemen Dion Phaneuf. The Flyers would score 3 goals in the second period. Talbot, Giroux
and Schenn scoring.
The Flyers win stops a three
game losing streak, the only one of the year. The Leafs haven't given up a power play goal in 18 games, incredible.
Former Flyer Lupul scored a power play goal for the Leafs.
Claude Giroux's 21st goal gave the Flyers
a 3-2 second period lead against the Leafs on Thursday night. He was also 10 for 16 in the face-off circle and a +2
for the night. He trails Malkin for the NHL points lead by 1.
Trade comparison from this summer:
Much draw dropping ensued when the Flyers dumped Jeff Carter
and Mike Richards, so here's a comparison with the various trades and also some notes about players they did not re-sign:
Jeff Carter for Jakub Voracek, 8th
pick in the draft (Sean Couturier), and the 3rd round draft pick (Nick Cousins):
Jeff Carter was re-activated Feb.2nd
from an injured shoulder. In 31 games he has 11 goals (6 on the PP), 7 assists and is -9.
Jakub Voracek is +5, has 2 game winning goals, 9 goals
and 22 assists. His fore-checking has been great.
Sean Couturier is +12,
has 3 game winning goals, 2 short-handed goals, 10 goals and 10 assists.
Nick
Cousins (3rd round pick) is 19 years old playing in the OHL with 26 goals and 35 assists.
I
know I'm partial, but I gotta give this one to the Flyers.
Mike Richards (w/ Rob Bordson) for Brayden
Schenn, Wayne Simmonds, and LA's 2nd round draft choice in 2012:
Mike Richards is doing better than Carter,
of course he's a lot better player. Richards also missed time due to injury, 8 games with the dreaded upper body injury.
In November he scored 9 goals in 10 games. He has missed two penalty shots this year, bringing his record to 0-7 in
career penalty shots. Just damm amazing really. Mike has 14 goals and twelve assist, including 2 short-handed
goals he scored in back to back games. 25 short-handed goals scored in his career.
Wayne Simmonds has a career high 17
goals along with 14 assists. 7 of his goals have come on the power play, 3 of his goals are game winners. He's
been in some fights were he has handled himself very well too. Looks sometimes like Mike Knuble in front of the net.
Brayden Schenn, another surprise rookie for the Flyers. Missed a decent amount of time due to
injuries. In 24 games he has 5 goals, 3 assists and is -4. Some nights he is among the Flyers leaders in hits.
Was the 5th overall pick in the 2010 draft.
Tough call here, but still going
the way of the Flyers. Brayden Schenn is one of the top overall prospects in hockey. When his body size catches
up to his heart, he will be a force for years to come. Mike Richards is a great player no doubt.
Next game:
Saturday vs Rangers 1pm in Philly
Sergei Bobrovsky was his usual
sharp self with 24 saves. He gave up a flukey goal of Coburn's
skate and a power play goal and was super solid.
Flyers rookie D-man Erik Gustafsson was +3 with an assist and
hit in almost 15 minutes of ice time against the Leafs.
Scott Hartnell was +2 with a goal and an assist against the Leafs.
